Tangier in 48 Hours: A Local's Itinerary

Tangier rewards a short, well-planned visit better than almost anywhere else in Morocco — its highlights sit close together, and two focused days is enough to understand why writers and painters have been drawn here for a century.

Day 1 morning — The Kasbah and the medina

Start at the Kasbah Museum, housed in a former sultan's palace, for the view over the Strait alone. From there, walk down into the Petit Socco, the small square that was once the beating heart of international Tangier, and follow the medina's lanes toward the port.

Day 1 afternoon — Café Hafa

No visit to Tangier is complete without tea at Café Hafa, a terrace of tiered tables cut into the cliffside above the water. Go in the late afternoon, order mint tea, and stay until the light over the Strait turns gold.

Day 2 — Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

Rent a car or arrange a driver for the morning and head fourteen kilometres west to Cap Spartel, the point where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet. The lighthouse and the wind-bent cliffside views make this worth the drive alone. A short distance further, the Caves of Hercules — a sea cave famous for an opening shaped like the map of Africa — make an easy add-on before heading back for lunch.

Day 2 afternoon — Asilah as a day trip

If you have the afternoon free, Asilah is under an hour south along the coast — its murals and ramparts make a graceful final stop before your onward journey.
