The Best Time to Visit Chefchaouen

The best overall time to visit Chefchaouen is during the first half of May or the first half of October, offering ideal 18–24°C hiking weather and manageable medina crowds. Spring brings lush green Rif trails and wildflowers around Akchour, while autumn offers exceptional late-afternoon light on the blue walls with minimal peak-season congestion.

The Best Time to Visit Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen's blue lanes photograph well in almost any weather, but the experience of actually walking them changes enormously depending on when you go. If you're planning around a single trip to the north, here's what each season really feels like on the ground.

Spring (March to June)

This is our own favourite window, and the one we route most departures through. The Rif is green, wildflowers line the trail to Akchour, and daytime temperatures sit comfortably between 18–24°C — warm enough for a hike, cool enough that the medina's staircases don't feel like a workout. Late April and May bring slightly larger crowds around Easter and the early European half-term breaks, but nothing close to peak season.

Summer (July and August)

Hot, bright, and busy. Midday temperatures regularly reach 32°C or higher, and the medina's narrow lanes trap heat between whitewashed walls. It's still a wonderful visit if you plan around the sun — early starts, an afternoon rest, and evenings on a rooftop terrace once the heat breaks. This is peak tourist season, so book accommodation well ahead.

Autumn (September to November)

Our second-favourite stretch. The summer crowds thin out by mid-September, temperatures ease back into the low-to-mid twenties, and the light in late afternoon is extraordinary against the blue walls. Early November can bring occasional rain, so pack a light layer.

Winter (December to February)

Quiet, cool, and atmospheric — daytime highs around 12–16°C, colder in the evenings, with the Rif's peaks occasionally dusted with snow. Chefchaouen empties of tour groups almost entirely, which suits travellers who want the medina to themselves and don't mind a scarf.

Our recommendation

If your dates are flexible, aim for the first half of May or the first half of October. You'll get comfortable hiking weather, manageable crowds, and the best version of the light that makes this town famous. Our Blue Pearl Escape and Rehla Al Shamal itineraries both run through these windows regularly — see the tour pages for upcoming departure dates.
