A Day in Asilah: Murals, Ramparts and the Atlantic
Asilah is Northern Morocco's artistic coastal jewel, located 45 km south of Tangier. A perfect day trip includes walking the 15th-century Portuguese ocean ramparts, admiring vibrant murals painted annually during the International Cultural Moussem, viewing the Atlantic swell from Krikia bastion at sunset, and enjoying freshly grilled sea bass at the fishing harbour.
Just forty-five kilometres south of Tangier, Asilah offers a peaceful, breezy contrast to Morocco's larger imperial cities. Its immaculate whitewashed medina, framed by 15th-century Portuguese ramparts and the deep blue Atlantic, makes it one of the most rewarding coastal day trips in the north.
Morning: Portuguese ramparts and Bab el-Bahr
Begin your day at Bab el-Kasbah or Bab Homar, entering a medina whose quiet stone lanes are paved with polished flagstones and lined with blue, green, and ochre-trimmed houses. Walk the seaside perimeter along the ramparts built during the Portuguese occupation in the late 1400s. The sea air is invigorating, and the elevated stone walkways offer sweeping panoramas of waves breaking against centuries-old bastions.
Midday: The living canvas of murals
Since 1978, the town has hosted the annual Asilah International Cultural Moussem (Festival of the Arts). Every summer, international and Moroccan painters transform the medina's whitewashed walls into vibrant public murals. Strolling through the residential alleys feels like exploring an open-air modern art museum, with each corner revealing bold contemporary brushwork.
Lunch: Fresh catch at the fishing harbour
Head towards the port just outside the medina walls for lunch. Asilah's fishing fleet brings in sea bass, sardines, squid, and red mullet daily. Local harbourfront restaurants serve seafood grilled simply with lemon, olive oil, and Moroccan salads.
Sunset: Krikia bastion and Tour de Raissouni
Conclude your afternoon at the southwestern tip of the ramparts at the Krikia bastion. Adjacent to the tomb of Sidi Ahmed Mansour, this curved stone terrace looks out over the Atlantic horizon. Watching the sun melt into the ocean as gulls circle overhead is an unforgettable Northern Moroccan ritual.
